What is true prosperity to you?

For most of us, prosperity means that we are able to live a lifestyle of comfort, beauty, pleasure and joy. We have enough of everything, and our needs as well as our desires can be met.

Have you taken the time to incorporate the first 4 Feng Shui prosperity tips? If not, I encourage you to explore them and incorporate the tip or tips that resonate most with you. For those of you that have incorporated the first 4 tips, here’s the 5th and final tip in this series.

The final step to creating a space that truly supports prosperity is to enhance the abundance area of your home.

Your home and each room can be divided into 9 life areas. Abundance is one of these areas. To find the correct zone, stand in the doorway leading into your home and face into the room. The back left corner is the area associated with abundance.

To enhance the abundance area of your home, apply each of the previous 4 steps to the home or room:

1.  Identify your goal, your reason for wanting change
2.  Clear clutter
3.  Power positioning
4.  Surround yourself with beauty and inspiration

Abundance is further enhanced by incorporating the colors red, blue, green and purple; you can do this with a piece of art, a poster, paint or even a plant that incorporates these colors. Lucky Bamboo is a great plant choice!

Place an object in your abundance area that speaks to you of prosperity. It can be a beautiful, healthy plant or a picture of your family, beautiful crystals and stones or simply a written affirmation. It can even be money itself! Be creative. Choose whatever feels right to you. Think back to your definition of prosperity and choose something that represents abundance to you.

Need inspiration? On the abundance area of my desk, I have a beautiful glass vase filled with Lucky Bamboo. In front of that sits a spectacular amethyst orb and a natural crystal.

What is prosperity to you?

True prosperity is the awareness of abundance in all areas of your life. To gain a balance and appreciation of abundance in all areas of your life follow the next step in my Prosperity tips and you’ll begin to, make space for abundance and opportunity.

What are you facing as you gaze out from your bed or desk? What do you see? What do you gaze upon during your working day or when you wake up in the morning?

What we see, our view, can offer us inspiration, vision, and an uplifting sense of energy. It can also deplete, depress and block us. A blank wall, a closet or a bookshelf, jumbled with an assortment of things, can make it hard for us to find inspiration.

Create an inspiring view by positioning your desk or your bed so you have a full view of your office or bedroom and a beautiful view in front of you. A beautiful, inspiring view might include a window filled with the abundance of nature, it can also be a beautiful picture, art, sculpture, a healthy plant, or simply a color that energizes and uplifts you.

You can also create an inspiring view through the use of mirrors. Position a beautiful mirror so that you can see out the window while seated at your desk or laying in bed – in fact, you should also position the mirror so that what you do see reflected is the best view possible. That might be a reflection out a window but it can also be a reflection of a beautiful object, art, a plant or even a lamp.

Are you compelled? Inspired? If not, change your view.

Perhaps you are inspired by a wonderful ocean view, or a view of the garden, or a view of mountains. Even if you are not able to actually see those things from your window, you can choose art that creates the environments you find inspiring.

Choose to create an environment that supports abundance. A blank wall or bulletin board isn’t motivating or compelling, but a beautiful poster incorporating colors you love and a subject that you find inspiring is.

Remember: You are profoundly affected by the environment around you, take the time to make it an environment you want to be in.

What is prosperity to you?

While it’s true that money does make many aspects of life easier, it is also true that money doesn’t bring happiness. True prosperity is the awareness of abundance in all areas of your life. To gain a balance and appreciation of abundance in all areas of your life, make space for abundance and opportunity. How?

3. Power positioning

In Feng Shui, your relationship to your home and the objects in your home is vital to creating a nurturing and supportive environment. And your relationship with your environment is determined, in a large part, by how and where you place the items you have.

Positioning relates to how much time you spend in a given space, and how you feel about the space you are in.

The three most important areas in your home with relation to positioning are:

1. position of the front door
2. placement of your bed
3. placement of your desk

Let’s talk about beds and desks. Arrange your bed or desk so you are supported by a wall behind you and you face into the room or office. Your position should provide a full view of the room and the door into the room. When your view is expansive, so are your opportunities!

Bed Placement

Placement of the bed holds the key to successful rest, rejuvenation, and restoration as well as symbolic representation of a solid foundation in life.

Arrange your bed so that the headboard is positioned against a wall. Your position should provide a full view of the room and the door into the room. When placing your bed, try not to align your bed so you’re directly in front of the door, or even overlapping the door. The energy coming through the door can be disruptive to your sleep and creates a sense of discomfort, even if only subconsciously.

Desk Placement

Your desk is the heart of your office. The placement of your desk is critical to the success and prosperity you enjoy in your professional life. If your desk is turned away from the door, facing a wall, your vision is literally blocked – so are your future opportunities!

When you make sure that you have your desk positioned in such a way that you have a solid wall behind you, open space in front of you and position the desk so that it is not in the direct path of the doorway, this is known as the command position. In this position you have complete control over the office and the work you do.

The best positioning follows these guidelines:

  • Have a solid wall behind you for support.
  • Position yourself so you are able to see the entrance to the room you are in.
Do not position yourself so you are in direct alignment with the door into the room or space.
  • Never have your back to the door; it’s hard to be an active part of the environment when you are physically turned away from it.
  • If you must position your bed or desk where there is a window behind you, be sure to strengthen your position by placing a credenza or other large object between the desk and the window behind you. For a bed, use a solid headboard and close the blinds or curtains at night to create the impression of a solid wall behind you.

Following these simple steps will help you turn your house into a home that embraces a sense of comfort and warmth – you’ll feel better too!

How? Clear clutter!

2. Clear all clutter.

It’s difficult to have a clear mind when the space around you isn’t clear. And if you don’t have a clear mind, it’s hard to focus your energy and if you can’t focus your energy it will be almost impossible to attract prosperity and opportunities to you.  It is important that you create the space for the opportunity you desire. A crowded space doesn’t allow anything else in.

Clutter is anything unused, unfinished, unresolved, tolerated or disorganized. Not sure? Ask yourself these 3 questions. Do I love it? Is it useful? Do I need it? If you answered ‘yes’ keep it, it isn’t clutter. If you answered ‘no’, release it. Sound simple? It can be, if you are honest with your answers..

Remove or replace anything you don’t absolutely love.
There are lots of things in your environment that don’t qualify as clutter, but are these things you absolutely love? Do they embrace you with fond memories? Stir your heart’s passion? Surround you with beauty? In Feng Shui, it is vital that the things around us nurture and support us. Take time to review your belongings. If they don’t embrace you with comfort and create a sense of welcome, release them.

Do it now!
The habit of putting off routine household chores or paperwork eventually results in a backlog of undone tasks. Once you’re behind in your work, it becomes more difficult to find the time and motivation to get caught up again. If you’re feeling overburdened by a long list of things to do, set aside some time to work through it. Take small steps; don’t try to do it all at once, start with one project or one area. Keep at it until you have things back where you’d like them to be.

Start slowly so you don’t become overwhelmed. You’ll be amazed at how your energy changes as things are cleared. Create the space for change to happen and opportunity will flow to you!

What is prosperity to you? Is it having a family? Good health? Financial security? Job security? Creative self-expression? Is it all of these things? Prosperity is broader than simply financial gain.

While it’s true that money does make many aspects of life easier, it is also true that money doesn’t bring happiness. True prosperity is the awareness of abundance in all areas of your life. To gain a balance and appreciation of abundance in all areas of your life, take time to write down everything you love about your life as it is now. Focus on what’s working in your life, not what you want or wish were different. Release old thoughts of not having ‘enough’. When we acknowledge the good in our lives, we embrace a sense of gratitude. True abundance flows to us when we ‘feel’ abundant.

1. Identify your goal, your reason for making changes.

Really focus on what’s working in your life and what isn’t. What can you do to improve your current situation? Do you have any unresolved issues or relationships that are contributing to your sense of ‘lack’? What aspects of your life would you like to improve? Do you want to increase prosperity? Gain a life/work balance? To experience a greater sense of clarity and focus, get clear on what you’d like to improve in your life and your reason for seeking improvement.

After creating your list of what’s working in your life and what isn’t, take your ‘what isn’t working’ list and rewrite it. Rewrite it from a positive perspective. For example, let’s say that one of the items on the list is, I want to make more money. To rewrite this from a positive perspective, try it this way: Money flows abundantly and easily to me. Notice how I shifted the language from a place of ‘want’ to a place of ‘actuality’. I wrote it from an affirmational point of view, as though it is so – right now.

Rewriting and languaging in this manner is a powerful shift in focus. We move from a place of lack to a place of being and over time we can shift our mindset in the same manner. Have you heard the saying, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it?” Well, I think you’ll see it when you believe it and changing your use of language is the first step toward believing.

Is the abundance area of your home located in your office?

As with all Feng Shui rooms,  command position is first and foremost. Your desk should be positioned so you have a solid wall behind you and when you are seated in your desk chair you have full view of the entire room as well as the door. You should avoid being positioned directly in line with the path of the door.

If the position of your desk is limited by the configuration of the room and you have to be positioned with a window behind you there are some effective solutions.  To create solid support, similar to a wall behind you,  you can use; plants, a decorative screen, a sofa table or console or even a bookcase or cabinet.

Second, you want the office to be organized in such a way that it supports the way you work, however that may be. You may stand up while you look out the window and talk on the phone; that’s different than sitting in a stationary position at your desk all the time. It’s really important to have an understanding of how you work and what works for you.

After placement, color is important because it can affect the energy of our office. Ideally, our offices should be mentally stimulating. So we want to choose colors that aren’t too dark, because that makes the space quiet. We want the space to be uplifting and energizing. Yellow tones, warm cream tomes and gold tones are fantastic for creating a room that supports a sense of awareness and energy.

Now that we have some of the basics out of the way, I want you to do a quick visualization exercise with me. Imagine you’re standing at the door to your office. As you look into your office, how do you feel? Is this a room that inspires and motivates you? Is this a room that excites you, a room that nourishes ideas?

If not, and for many of us our home offices are places of disarray and mixed function, take the time to incorporate the ideas I’ve listed above and add the following:  bring in a touch of nature to invigorate your space. This is as easy as opening your window or adding a healthy plant or two to your office. Increase the amount of lighting in your office by incorporating a floor or table lamp. Consider adding art that inspires you with its meaning and color.

It’s hard to achieve abundance when you don’t feel abundant and a dark, dreary, cluttered office effectively blocks the flow of energy. And when the flow of energy is blocked, so is abundance!

Use the rules of Feng Shui to support abundance and prosperity and energy will flow!

The place to start talking about abundance is outside your house. This is more than curb appeal, this is about creating a dynamic sense of welcome so that your home is uplifting and energetic.

In Feng Shui, you often hear that you should paint your front door red. Maybe yes, maybe no. It depends on many things. The color of the front door should complement the color of your home and it should visually make the door step forward so that it is easily visible. It should be a color that makes your heart sing!

All colors have a wide range of tones to choose from. From the softest, lightest shade to the most saturated shade.

Red and red tones are great for front doors. They are energetic, passionate colors.
Purple tones are lovely front door colors. They have the attributes of both blue and red. They represent abundance and royalty! Yum!
Blue is a wonderful color, it both supports water (the element often associated with front door placement), relaxation, comfort and adaptability.
Green represents nature, health, and wealth. It is the color of balance throughout nature.
Black can be a powerful color for a front door. Strong, stately and a bit traditional.
Yellow and gold tones are fantastic at brightening the area around the front door, and making the door visually step forward.
White is often the fall back color for a front door and it is without a doubt the color that tends to de-emphasize the door. So if your door is white, consider a new color.

Based on the Bagua, a template that divides your living space into 9 equal segments and each segment represents a different life energy, the abundance area is located in the back left section of your home.

For many of you, the back left section of your home might be the family room. That’s pretty common. Let’s break down the family room and the placement of objects within that room for optimal flow. Feng Shui is about energy, chi`, and for energy to flow, it has to have space, so placement is a very important detail.

To support abundance and prosperity, this room should represent the energy of abundance and prosperity to you. What does abundance look like to you? What does prosperity look like to you? What does abundance and prosperity feel like? For most of us,  it probably doesn’t look like a bunch of clutter or odds and ends. If your family room is in abundance and prosperity, it shouldn’t be filled with odds and ends and bits you’ve picked up along the way.

In the family room, the single most important feature is NOT the T.V, it’s the sofa. The sofa is the main feature. What does that mean? You should love it. You should love the shape, the size, the way it feels when you sit in it. It should not be the most uncomfortable seat in the house, and certainly not in that room.

This room should absolutely open its arms to you with welcome, like it is giving you a hug. The sofa placement is really important. It should be positioned that it’s facing you. When a sofa has its back to you it’s like a wall. A wall doesn’t draw you in; you walk around it and often right by it into another room!

The sofa should be comfy and cozy. This could be overstuffed but it doesn’t have to be. It’s about comfort. We all have different styles and preferences. Honor your personal style.

Color. The color of your family room should speak to your soul. It should create the feeling of embrace. It should feel like your personal paradise. The one place in your life where you  can be completely who you are is in your home. Even if your home is an apartment or rented home, you can create that sense of embrace in your home. Color can be incorporated through paint, accessories, art, lighting, rugs, curtains; the list goes on and on.

The objects in your space are within your control. Maybe you can’t paint the walls, but you can choose your own art. You can choose pillows. Accessories are a great way to bring in accent colors. Afraid of color? Begin by making little changes. Fresh flowers, a vase, a lamp, a lampshade, a pillow or a throw blanket. These can be in a yummy color or even an animal print.

The possibilities are truly limitless. All you have to do is give yourself permission and the door to abundance can swing open!
